Why now is the ideal time to review your company HR

With our new HR Health Check product recently updated and re-launched for the start of 2026, we take a look at why right now is the ideal time for companies to review their HR policies and structure ahead of a new financial year.

1. NZ financial year timing works in your favour

With just two months remaining of the current NZ financial year, the next few weeks are ideal for:

  • Aligning HR strategy with budget planning
  • Locking in headcount, role design, and remuneration frameworks
  • Avoiding rushed policy changes once the year is already underway

If you wait until April/May, you’re usually reacting instead of shaping.

2. Employment law & compliance check (low-effort, high value)

Even if no major reforms are imminent, this is the right window to:

  • Sanity-check policies against current Employment Relations Act obligations
  • Review leave, flexible work, disciplinary, and performance management processes
  • Ensure managers are actually applying policies consistently (this is where risk hides)

A light refresh now can prevent very expensive problems later.

3. Structure before hiring (especially in NZ’s market)

With NZIER’s recent quarterly survey of business opinion showing a strong uptick in confidence, many NZ businesses are planning to recruit and hire new staff again. If you’re expecting:

  • Growth
  • Restructuring
  • Cost pressure
  • Or capability gaps

…it’s smarter to review org structure and role clarity first, then recruit. NZ organisations often hire reactively; this is your chance to design intentionally.

4. Performance & remuneration cycles

Many NZ companies align performance reviews, pay reviews and bonus structures with the financial year. Reviewing policies now lets you:

  • Fix misaligned incentives
  • Clean up inconsistent performance frameworks
  • Set managers up with clearer guidance before reviews begin

5. Cultural signal (this one’s underrated)

Doing an HR review before the new FY sends a signal internally that:

  • People systems matter
  • Decisions are planned, not ad hoc
  • Leadership is thinking long-term
